Being a cam model is often stigmatized by some, for others it is above all an activity like any other, or even a full-time job. But why the discrepancy? Alice tells everything.
If you do a Google search, you will find many sites where you can watch and communicate with cam models, but you will learn little about their activity. If you research the internet for interviews, reports, research or studies, there are few or no documents about them. Yet the charmed hostesses are real and generate a lot of traffic on the web.
Having an activity that allows you to earn money is quite normal and being a cam model is one of them. But prejudice remains. So are the clichés. Not all of them are cash-strapped students or women exploited by human trafficking networks. Let’s stop the false images; instead, let’s talk about body positivity, sex and self-love. We went to meet Alice, a model for some time, who shares her experience. Below is the interview with Alice.
Alice, what made you decide to get into the camming?
In the beginning, it was money. Yes, it’s basic, but I saw several advantages. I could control my schedule, my image, I could stay at home while earning more than just being employed in an office. Yet I have asked myself a lot of questions about my self-esteem. Would I be able to do this? Would I be able to accept the image I was going to provide? It made me a little anxious, but that quickly passed.
And then, I always loved sex, playing, seducing etc. It sounds much more natural than prospecting on the phone in an office. Yes, I know it’s paradoxical, but it’s like that (laughs). In the end, the idea of camming gave me the feeling of being able to perform and embrace my sexuality in a safe environment…
Did filming give you more confidence? Because it takes courage to stand in front of a camera …
This is the paradox of the whole thing, again! In everyday life, I’m pretty shy, but once the camera is on, I transform myself. I’m becoming someone else. Toanswer your question, I am “she” while being me. Maybe it’s called the “other me”, something like that…
This is what my subscribers appreciate, I am sure of myself, I am overflowing with confidence and it gives me more freedom in what I dare to offer them. I feel good, free. So they do, too. And receiving lots of compliments is always a pleasure. Successful shows excite me and fill me with pride. Happiness distributed! (laughs)
Does talking to those around you take courage? How do you feel about stigma?
I don’t talk about it at all because not everyone understands. And I am a strong advocate for sex workers, because every activity deserves respect. But I’m still discreet about my business and about my income because I don’t want to be the target of mockery that could hurt me. Insults are never nice. However, everyone practices sex, it’s really hypocritical.
Sometimes you’re told to get a real job, what do you say to that?
So, I’m not told directly but I’ve often been offered “help”, whether it’s my subscribers or strangers I met by chance. I thank them and I say that I am very happy to do what I am doing now. I love my standard of living and my independence. It’s nice and hurtful at the same time because it provides an idea of their vision of camming.
Did camming meet your expectations?
It’s easy to get discouraged, especially at first. Currently, I am making more than I ever have since I started, but I would not have arrived here if I had not maintained it, if I had not continued to practice and if I had not developed relationships with the viewers. From here, I feel that I can only improve.
Do you feel close to a particular community? Do you have a sense of belonging?
No, because I don’t talk to any other camgirl, for several reasons. It saves me from comparing myself and losing self-confidence or feeling competitive. I’m only concerned with my efforts as a camgirl.
Finally, can you tell me what you like best and what you like least about your job?
Besides the money, it is really my autonomy, my independence that is most important to me and that makes me appreciate camming more than anything. And then I like the compliments I get.
On the other hand, what I do not enjoy are the people who insist on having particular actions that I refuse to perform. There’s no point insisting, a camgirl does what she likes. Nothing is more annoying than someone who insists and who also does not want to pay to get what he wants. Fortunately, there are blocking functions on the platforms. Everything is thought out in detail for our comfort.
Thank you, Alice.
With pleasure.
