What is latex?

Latex is a textile made from the rubber tree. After treatment, latex is a very flexible and becomes a translucent material. It is possible to do just about anything you want with it with Latex. Latex has a mat texture, which becomes shiny after a special treatment. It is therefore important to take good care of your outfits to make sure they maintain their original look. Latex outfits are inseparable from domination fetishism and BDSM (more info on fetish acronyms can be found here).

Before you start

Do not try to put on your outfit as is. Not only would this be extremely unpleasant as it can pull out your hairs but you could also damage your outfit by pulling too hard on it. So, since you should never put on a latex outfit ‘dry’, you have 2 types of products options.

TALC

Talc is the most obvious option. It is naturally slippery and will make the outfit easier to put on. It also has the advantage of being inexpensive and easily found in any large store (in the baby products section). Be careful as it can sometimes leave marks on the outfit, which can be lasting. Last little piece of advice on talc – buy one that’s as natural and pure contents as much possible. Avoid scented talc, for instance, as it contains additives which are harmful to latex.

A SPECIFIC LUBRICANT

As its name suggests, the lubricant will allow to put the outfit on smoothly. This is most effective for latex outfits. Specific lubricants such as “vividress”, for example, are very easily found in shops that sell latex. Unlike talc, it has the advantage of leaving no residue. Keep in mind that the price is significantly higher with these lubricants.

Another tip if your outfit is stored in a cold place, remember to take it out a little beforehand to avoid it being unpleasant.

Putting on the latex outfit

When putting the outfit on, you have the choice between 2 techniques (or you can combine the two). Either apply your talc powder or your lubricant (not both at the same time) inside your garment before putting it on, or you apply it on the body. Put more where the narrow parts of the outfit are, such as the legs and arms.

Then you just have to put it on very gently, taking care to slide the material against your skin to adjust it as smoothly as possible. Do not pull too hard on it, latex is fragile. And pay close attention to your nails. If your hand gets slippery (because of the lubricant), use a cloth to pull on your outfit. Also, if creases form, run your hand inside to smooth the fabric or push the latex from the outside with the soft part of your fingers (never with the tip). If any body part gets stuck, withdraw it from the outfit, add lubricant and try again. Finally, take care to set the outfit right at the folds (between the legs and under the armpits) because the tensions exerted could cause the outfit to crack.

Take your time, do not be in a hurry (always allow at least 15 minutes for putting on your outfit before your show) and do not get upset, as you risk doing things wrong and damaging it. By doing it gently, you will extend your the lifetime of your outfit, because handling it roughly could weaken the latex.

Latex care

You will then have to take great care of your outfit outside of the periods when you wear it. Here are some washing tips first.

First, pay attention to where you are going to wash it: choose a clean basin or a  sink. If you prefer a bathtub, make sure that it is free of any traces of detergent or other cleaning products which are very harmful to latex. For washing, lukewarm water and dish soap will do the trick. No need to scrub, just apply the product on the entire surface and leave to soak for a few minutes. The rinsing step is very important, you must rinse the surface AND the underside of the outfit in order to remove all the detergent residues (which when drying stiffen the latex). So rinse thoroughly with a shower head.

While you are at it, apply “vivishine” to make the latex shine and protected before you store it. Soak your outfit in warm water with a cap of vivishine for a few minutes. Do not rinse after this step but proceed to dry it. Here too, special attention must be paid to dry all the outfit parts. Use a plastic hanger, peeling off the internal sides in process. Do not hesitate to turn the outfit inside out to complete the drying process. Finally let your latex outfit dry indoors and especially out of direct sunlight, which could discolour and weaken the material.

Latex storage

If you do not use vivishine, you must apply talc to both sides of the outfit before putting it away. Store it out of direct sunlight and in a dry place. You can put it on a hanger or lay it flat or folded. If you have several latex outfits, avoid putting them in contact with each other, because the colors could rub off. For better storage, use dye covers (or large plastic bags). Also make sure that no metallic element is in contact with the latex in order to avoid any risk of stains. Finally, here is the list of products that are harfmul to latex: sun, excessive heat, humidity, prolonged baths, fatty products, all types of solutions with an acidic or basic PH, metals (copper, tin , silver…).
