Interview: Raven, a camgirl who achieved her dream

This summer “Le Tag Parfait” (a French online magazine dedicated to porn culture) interviewed a young camgirl, Raven. Fulfilled, she is finally doing what she has always wanted to do thanks to her camera. In the BDSM scene, with long black hair, our hostess immediately sets the tone. There’s no mistaking it!

Welcome to the land of spanking and anal hooks. Raven is going to explain to us the hows and whys of her camming work. You can find the interview in its original context HERE.

Tag Parfait questions: who are you? What do you do? How long have you been in the business? Introduce yourself.

Raven: I’m Raven, that’s been my nickname since I was about 15 years old. I’ve been in the cam and porn business only since March. I’ve always wanted to do it, but I have to say that my situation didn’t really allow me to do so in terms of financial stability. I was really waiting to have my house, etc. It took me a little while to get started. Since March, with the lockdown, I’ve been making the most of it and it is now my full-time job.

Your full-time job… So you have a typical working day? Or do you improvise every day?

Raven: No, not at all! (Laughs) There’s no slacking off! I set myself a daily goal of money to raise, and I don’t go to bed until I’ve reached it. I don’t work in the morning. Also, i spend time with my loved ones or take care of whatever I have to do, and I really start working at 3pm (camming, creating content, etc.).

For my daily quota, I have a rather strange way of working: let’s say I really exceeded it on Monday, well that doesn’t allow me not to meet the quota the next day. I absolutely have to meet my daily quota every day. Then, from midnight onwards, I do all the accounting: I enter everything in my account books, what I have sold, on which sites, etc. And I sleep straight away afterwards, around 3am. I take Sunday and Wednesday off. My job is not at all a constraint, and I’m finally doing what I love.

Has lockdown had any impact on your work?

Raven: My customers were buying much more created content (photos, videos, etc.) than they were spending on live cams. I had a very, very good month under lockdown. Since then I’ve seen a slight decrease (laughs). But I’m still within my daily quotas, so no worries! 3/4 of my clients on the platforms are married couples with children (or single parents) who are making the most of being alone during the day. They log in on weekday afternoons, except Friday evening and Saturday/Sunday.

Your content is oriented towards Gothic and BDSM. On some of your photos, you’re even bleeding… Is this a real attraction on your part for this kind of thing, or is it a cleverly calculated marketing trick?

Raven: I’ve been into BDSM since I was very young. It’s something that can easily be very pretty in photos, performances and everything else, and I needed to show it off like that. I associate my cam shows with BDSM – I enjoy myself, and so do my customers.

When I was younger, I asked around with people in the scene, without really knowing what BDSM was. Back then I didn’t even know the acronym. I didn’t know it was a category, a way of life. Then I did some research, I grew up… That’s how it started, that’s all. There’s nothing to think about.

Let’s return to your shows. Do you prefer private or public shows?

Raven: Private shows, absolutely. I really enjoy building relationships with my clients, which a public show doesn’t allow. The audience is pretty good, we really have fun, but I only do it once a week on Sundays.

Talking about your relationship with your community, was it complicated to build one? What kind of relationship do you have with it?

Raven: I’m a very bad example because I was already a photo model before, I already had a big community since I was 18 and I’ll soon be turning 24… It was built with social media, so I couldn’t really answer. For example, I have people who are currently following my live cam shows who have been around since I was 18 years old.

Sometimes they sometimes bring up old photos that I don’t remember much about! It’s super fun. Also, sometimes people come across me or recognise me IRL, and tell me on social media “ah I saw you but I didn’t dare”. Of course there are some more… difficult clients. But blocking them is very easy, plus I have the advantage of not doing anything in real life. On the whole, I have regular clients, and others who are less regular but who may have been there for a long time… It’s varied.

Tell us a little about your OnlyFans, what do you offer your customers?

Raven: My OnlyFans is free with paid content inside. All you have to do to access the content I offer is sign up, and then you can choose what you want. There’s no subscription and I post once or twice a week. This lets clients be sure they’re getting what they paid for. For example, I do a lot of watersports and not everyone likes it. So, I don’t want to impose this on people who aren’t interested. Customers buy what they want when they want. I’m very transparent.

What’s your relationship with other sex workers like? Is a project in a pair, or more, on the agenda?

Raven: They’re wonderful! Frankly there’s so much kindness, I’ve never seen anything like it. We all stick together, we give each other advice every day, it’s great. For the moment, as far as camgirls are concerned, I don’t have any collaborations planned, except with a dominatrix, but through interposed screens. I’d prefer to focus on myself for the moment.

You’re on several platforms: OnlyFans, FetLife, Camcokine, Vends ta Culotte. In short, you are not struggling for work. What impact does this job have on your life? Has your sexuality been affected by it?

Raven: I have one less mental load in everyday life, I’m doing what I love. And doing what you love for work is wonderful. I arrange my schedule how I want, I create content, I talk to people, I have enormous freedom. It’s only happiness.

In terms of my sexuality, there’s been no impact, because I do BDSM on cam as a result of what I do in real life. And not the other way around. This is what I’d usually be doing anyway, only now I’m making money off it.

Excuse me for being pessimistic, but between the cases of cyber-bullying, the exorbitant commissions of the platforms, or the little money to be made in general, why did you get into this? What difficulties do you face on a daily basis?

Raven: So, at first, I started doing this alongside my regular job. I did both, I wanted to see how it was going to go before I quit the day job. I wanted to see if it was financially viable. And i set everything out, I discussed it with my husband who encouraged me and then some. It was really a very considered move. I did “trial months” working both my regular job and sex work, and it was really tiring.

But I saw that I could do it. After that I didn’t encounter any difficulties because I am very straightforward in my life. Naturally, I asked for help from colleagues, for tax returns and all that. And with their knowledge and mine, we get things done. I’m doing really well. In any case, since I’m self-employed nothing is stopping me from finding myself a half-time job as an employee later on if I really have a drop in work or something else.

As far as commissions are concerned, you have to choose the right platform. Mine range from 20% to 40%. But without existing sites, I wouldn’t be able to work as much as I do. I wouldn’t get away with just using social media. I take these commissions as a quid pro quo. Admittedly, that’s a lot, especially on top of taxes, this or that. And don’t forget that the platforms have a payment system in place, because, on Paypal, the accounts jump… These platforms also bring anonymity for the customer, in the form of a username. But some sites totally abuse their power, with like 70% commission! Sorry guys, but I have bills to pay!

So, where do you see yourself in a year? What’s your business plan?

Raven: I put what I earn to the side. I think that by the time I’m 50, 55 or 60, I might not have the strength I have today, nor the patience. If I ever have other professional projects that require money, I will have enough to deal with that. In the end, as I said, I wouldn’t mind going back to a paid job somewhere. If I last 3, 4 or 10 years working as a camgirl, that’d be wonderful.

How do you view the latest legislative changes in the area of age monitoring for access to pornography?

Raven: It scares the hell out of us because social media sites are our showcases. I only use Twitter or Instagram for my advertising and looking for new clients. I follow the law very closely. And i think I can speak for my colleagues when I say that we are on edge and freaked out about it. My community is French. Next I’d like to expand into the international market. Without social media, that’s impossible.
